When Bolt decided to open its San Francisco Headquarters they reached out to me to ask me to bid on a Sculptural screen wall and shipping container office for their new space. They had already hired a well regarded San Francisco architecture firm to build out the main space in the office, but wanted to see proposals from smaller artists and designers for the more ‘interdisciplinary spaces’. After rounds of proposals and meetings I was hired to design and build both spaces, about two days later I was on a plane from New York to San Francisco to start the project.
The SHIPPING CONTAINER:
San Francisco is historically a port city, with really beautiful temperate, though sometimes damp and chilly, weather. The Client wanted a flexible space that could be used as a work space, but would also function and flow well for hosting events. When the days are warmer, the shipping container serves as an extension of the office and an in between inside and outside space, with counter height work stations and comfy seating and large double doors that open out to the patio area. I also created a bar area with electricity and music with good flow of traffic to the outdoor patio.
The backside of the shipping container serves as bike storage for the many employees that bike to work. I designed and constructed custom 10” hexagonal washers that span the corrugated walls of the shipping container, so that we could attach standard bike racks to the back of the building.
